Global Majority Mentoring

What does Global Majority Mean?

Global Majority is a collective term that refers to people who are Black, Asian, Brown, dual heritage, indigenous to the global south, or have been racialised as ethnic minorities. It is a collective term which seeks to empower those it describes by disrupting deficit narratives that exist around racialised and otherwise 'othered’ groups.

What is the Global Majority (GM) Mentor Programme?

Nationally, there is still an attainment gap between GM pupils and their white counterparts; GM students are less likely to gain a first or 2:1 degree in comparison to their white peers. There is also a low percentage of teachers who are visibly GM, which results in a lack of positive role models in schools for GM pupils to identify with and look up to.

Providing GM role models as mentors is a simple and effective way to inspire young people to be the best that they can be. The mentor programme aims to help young people improve their own self-esteem.

Pupils will be given the opportunity to understand more about university and improve their study skills, and hopefully this will positively influence the number of GM people from local schools progressing onto higher-level learning.

We would like for the lasting impact of the programme on GM school pupils to be that they will feel:

  • More confident in their identity, leading to raised engagement with their studies and extra-curricular activities.
  • Inspired by having a mentor like themselves, motivating them to achieve their best.
  • Able to speak with and seek support from their mentors regarding issues relating to identity and race, entrepreneurship, creating change, and being decision makers in their own lives and communities.
