Global Majority Mentoring

THE MENTEE: INTRODUCTION TO THE ROLE

Across the U.K., students in the Global Majority are facing more challenges throughout the course of their education. The university attainment rate and projected grades are lower for students in the Global Majority than for their white peers.

The Global Majority Mentoring programme offers students, or mentees, such as yourself the opportunity to open a dialogue about these concerns and discuss the ways in-which these issues can be confronted. You're not expected to have the answers, and that is why you will be paired with a GM mentor who has faced similar challenges.

You and your mentor will attend 7 hour-long sessions in your school with a different focus or topic of discussion for each meeting; from reflecting on your cultural heritage to developing skills that can help you in applying for universities and jobs. As a reward for your hard work, the eighth and final session will be a celebration event on UWE Frenchay Campus!

The structure of the programme is designed to help you:

• Feel inspired and empowered by your mentor and their achievements.

• Grow confident in yourself and in your identity.

• Develop skills that can be utilised in your future professional lives and in applying to colleges and universities.

To find out more about the structure, download the Mentee Guidebook at the bottom of the page.

What does the mentee need to do?

To be present and curious. The mentor is there to facilitate the session, though you will get more out of these sessions if you come prepared with questions and leave with thoughts and ideas. The guidebook offers space for you to reflect upon each session, along with links and resources that your mentor believes can help in your personal and professional journey.

Before your first session, consider what your aims and objectives for the programme might be. What would you like to get out of it? What would you like to know about your mentor’s experiences? Do you have any future goals and aspirations?

And remember: these meetings are for you. The guide below offers a structure to these sessions; though if there are particular topics and concerns you would like to raise, then these sessions are the perfect place.
