Global Majority Mentoring

INTRODUCTION TO THE ROLE OF THE MENTOR

Across the U.K., students in the Global Majority are facing challenges throughout the course of their education. The university attainment rate and projected grades are currently lower for students in the Global Majority than for their white peers.

The Global Majority Mentoring programme is an opportunity for role models, or mentors, in the GM to offer guidance and support to younger students in sixth form, or mentees. Mentors will help to create a safe environment for the mentees to open a dialogue about the problems that they may be concerned about in their education and personal life, though no mentee should feel obligated to do so. Additionally, mentors will transfer knowledge they have acquired over the years to better equip younger mentees for their future.

As a mentor, you will be assigned to a group of GM mentees and will attend 7 hour-long sessions in your school with a different focus or topic of discussion for each meeting; from reflecting on your cultural heritage to developing skills that can help you in applying for universities and jobs. As a reward for your hard work, the eighth and final session will be a celebration event on UWE Frenchay Campus!

What does the mentor need to do?

You are not expected to have mentoring or experience working with children, and as such, Future Quest will provide training on Frenchay campus and attendance of this is mandatory. Familiarising yourself with our safeguarding policy is extemely important - you can find links to this at the bottom of the page. Utilizing the mentor guidebook and useful links can help you better prepare your sessions; and the better prepared you are, the more the mentees will get out of the programme!

Before your first session, consider what aims and objectives your mentees might have for the programme. What questions might they ask of you? What experiences do you think would be useful to share? And remember this programme is as much for you as for them; so consider what would you like to get out of it.

Future Quest will be with you every step of the programme, and should you need additional guidance or support please reach out. For us, this is a programme which we would like to see continuing into next year, so an evaluation form will be available for you to complete below, and we would love to hear feedback of your experience, and the experience of the mentees, of this programme so we can improve it in the future.
